When the Internet first went public, Internet Service Providers (ISP) would provide their subscribers with an email account. However, if you ever moved to a different ISP, you lost that email address(es). That means you would need to contact all of your friends, family, clubs, organizations, banks, etc., and update to your new email from your new ISP. For that simple reason, most people today elect to use one of the many free 'lifetime' email accounts (e.g., @yahoo.com, @gmail.com, etc.).

The nice thing about these free lifetime accounts is that they stay with you no matter how many ISPs you switch to/from.
