How to setup your Netgear router

Most new routers (or routers that have been reset to factory defaults) have to be taken through the Netgear Genie setup wizard before they will successfully connect to the Internet. The instructions included in this article are "Netgear-generic", but they should give you the information you need to get online. If you are having problems, please contact our Office during normal business hours for assistance.

Connect to your router:

Option 1: The best way to access your router is to use an ethernet (computer) cable between your laptop/computer and any of the router's "LAN" ports (the WAN or Internet port is reserved for the Internet source).

Option 2: If you don't have a device with an ethernet port (e.g., an iPad, MacBook Pro, smart phone, etc.), you can try to connect to your router's wifi. Most Netgear router's have the wifi name and password on the bottom/back of the router (e.g. something like NETGEAR22 and arcticpizza987).

Option 3: Some routers are best setup using their smart phone app. Search the Google Play or iTunes Store for your router's app (e.g., Netgear Orbi mesh router).

Once you are connected to your router, open your web browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and type "routerlogin.net" (without quotes) into your web browser's address bar (at top) and press enter/return. That should start the Netgear Genie Setup Wizard. Continue to "router setup settings" section below.

If you have an older Netgear router, instead of using routerlogin.net, use '192.168.1.1' (without quotes) and press enter/return. You should then be prompted to login to the router. The default login for most Netgear routers is:

  • Username: admin
  • Password: password (case-sensitive)

Router setup settings (may change as Netgear makes changes to their firmware):

  1. Accept the license and click continue. The Genie will try to determine what type of Internet connection you have automatically.

  2. Select “LET me chose” (when prompted).

  3. Select “ROUTER mode” and click continue.

  4. Select “NO” when it asks if you can turn the other wireless connection off, and click continue.

  5. Change to default router password. I recommend just entering the wifi password here (from the sticker on the bottom of the router).

  6. Answer the security questions.

  7. UNCHECK the download apps boxes and click continue.

  8. Download and install any firmware (software) updates. It will download, install and then reboot the router. You will lose access to the router while it reboots, but it will automatically re-connect you when it's back up.

  9. You don’t have to create an account or register the router. You can skip it or do it if you want to.

  10. That should be all you need to get on the Internet! The rest of the pages they give you are just customizations. The User's Manual is something like 200 pages long! There are a lot of things you can do with your router but these settings are all you need to get online.
