How do I update the router's firmware?
Routers have firmware (software) that you need to update every couple of months. These firmware updates are critical as they provide performance improvements, security updates and feature upgrades. Ignoring these updates contributes to slow speeds, poor wifi connection or availability, and frequent disconnections.
Generic Router Firmware Update Instructions:
Method 1: Some routers have smart phone apps which make firmware updating easier. See if you can find your router manufacturer's app and login to your router from that. Make sure you are connected to your router's wifi before you try to login. Once logged in, most of these apps have some kind of firmware update button and it should update your router automatically.
When logging in, you will be asked for a username and/or password. The username is usually just 'admin' (without the quotes), and the password is either something you created or the same password as your wifi. If you forgot your login credentials, you may have to reset your router to factory defaults and then reprogram it. So make sure you write down your login credentials and keep it in a safe place so you don't have to do that.
Method 2: The other common way to update your router's firmware is to login to it from a device (e.g., computer, laptop, tablet/iPad). Either connect to your router using an ethernet cable, or connect to your router's wifi. Once connected, try to access your router using one of the common login links below:
- Netgear routers: http://www.routerlogin.net or http://192.168.1.1. Once logged in, go to ADVANCED tab --> ADMINISTRATION --> ROUTER UPDATE.
- ASUS routers: http://192.168.1.1. Once logged in, click on the firmware number/link at top-center. It will be something like 3.0.0.8.4321. It will automatically take you to the firmware page.
- Linksys routers: http://192.168.1.1. Once logged in, click CONNECTIVITY --> Check for updates (on right-side).
- D-Link/Belkin routers: http://192.168.1.1, http://192.168.2.1 or http://192.168.0.1
When logging in, you will be asked for a username and/or password. The username is usually just 'admin' (without the quotes), and the password is either something you created or the same password as your wifi.
