How to setup your Linksys (Cisco) router

Most new routers (or routers that have been reset to factory defaults) have to be taken through the setup wizard before they will successfully connect to the Internet. The instructions included in this article are "Linksys-generic", but they should give you the information you need to get online. If you are having problems, please contact our Office during normal business hours for assistance.

Connect to your router:

Option 1: The best way to access your router is to use an ethernet (computer) cable between your laptop/computer and any of the router's "LAN" ports (the blue WAN or Internet port is reserved for the Internet source).

Option 2: If you don't have a device with an ethernet port (e.g., an iPad, MacBook Pro, smart phone, etc.), you can try to connect to your router's wifi. Most Linksys router's have the wifi name of 'Linksys12345' (and/or 'Linksys12345-5G') and no password.

Option 3: Some routers are best setup using their smart phone app. Search the Google Play or iTunes Store for your router's app (e.g., Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers, Linksys Velop).

Once you are connected to your router, open your web browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and type "192.168.1.1" (without quotes) or "myrouter.local(without quotes) into your web browser's address bar (at top) and press enter/return. The router has two ways to login - cloud/email and local. Find the link that says "Local Access" and click on that.

When prompted to login to the router, use the password of admin (case-sensitive) and click "Log In".

Router setup settings (may change as Linksys makes changes to their firmware):

  1. Select "GO" at the bottom.

  2. Change to default router password. I recommend leaving the username as 'admin' and just change the password. NOTE: Routers have two passwords - one to manage/configure the router and one for the wifi. THIS password here is to manage/configure the router. It can be the same as your wifi password if you wish. Then click "NEXT."

  3. The router will then detect your internet connection.

  4. You should then be directed to your wifi settings (which you customize). Enter the desired network name (SSID) and network key (password) into the corresponding boxes (the ones that currently say ASUS and ASUS-5G). The network name (SSID) is what people will see when they look for your wifi on their device. The password is what they will use to securely connect to your wifi. Then then click "Apply."

NOTE: At this point, once you click Apply, you will lose access to the router. That's because you just changed the network name and password. All you have to do next is to connect your device to your new network name and password and then continue on with the setup below.

  5. A login prompt will appear. Enter the credentials that were entered earlier in step 2 and click OK.

  6. The settings page (aka dashboard) for the router will open. Click the Logout button at the top of the page to logout of the router’s settings. Your done!

  7. That should be all you need to get on the Internet! The rest of the pages they give you are just customizations. The User's Manual is something like 200 pages long! There are a lot of things you can do with your router but these settings are all you need to get online.
